Welcome Aboard’s adventure tourism, Thrillseekers, near Hanmer Springs has been spared direct-hit earthquake woes. It has, however, been compromised by reduced South Island arrivals (owing to the Canterbury earthquakes and worldwide economic downturn) but has held its own reasonably well over the past 18 months. Now the adventure tourism site , popular for a raft of adventure activities including thrilling jet-boat rides on the rushing Waiau River and Bungee-jumping from the lofty historic bridge, is getting a leg-up with the daily Hanmer Connection transport. Visitors to Christchurch, and indeed locals, can book day packages combining transport and adventure activities via the Welcome Aboard website, Christchurch I-Site, or from Hanmer Connection. And two popular Welcome Aboard Grand Tour drivers, Ian Wilson and Ray Pyne, have been seconded to drive some Hanmer Connection services.
Hanmer Connection services conveniently depart from the improvised i-site just inside the entrance to Christchurch Botanic Gardens. Services depart Christchurch at 9am and 2pm. Return departures (from the Hanmer Springs i-site) are timed for 11am and 4.30pm. Thrillseekers pickups are 10 minutes later than the Hanmer Springs times.
