Christchurch mayor, Bob Parker had luck on his side for his 60th birthday bash yesterday. The venue was somewhere near Punakaiki on the West Coast. Joined by wife Jo, Bob’s three sons and their attractive partners they travelled to Greymouth aboard KiwiRail’s recently re-equipped TranzAlpine. The birthday journey began with coffee followed by a Champagne breakfast. Later KiwiRail staffer Jo brought in a cake adorned with flaming candles. The on-board birthday celebrations caused must amusement amongst their fellow travellers.
The eight birthday celebrating people sat around two tables. It was an excellent example of what can be done with ease on rail transportation.
Mayor Bob and Jo enjoyed a couple of stints out on the always popular open-air viewing carriage. He was complimentary about the KiwiRail on-board staff and was most impressed with the new AK carriages recently completed at Dunedin’s Hillside railway workshops.
“If more of these carriages were available we would see a lot more travellers choosing rail in New Zealand,” he said. Of course we know Mayor Bob has a soft spot for anything on rail. He has been a consistent supporter of our Christchurch Heritage Trams scheduled to be back on track this year and his long-time wish for a modern light rail metro system for the city is no secret. In fact he has a worthy wish list for an enlightened Christchurch future. Certainly, at 60, Mayor Bob Parker is showing no signs of losing his spark.
