When working on the city trams I would introduce a co-worker, Ken Henderson, as one of two people in this world who wear a permanent smile as their default facial expression. Typically, I was asked “Who is the other?”
I would mention Charlie Ogston, a Train Manager frequently seen on the TranzAlpine. Tram passengers planning a TranzAlpine trip were advised to look out for him. A few months ago I fulfilled an ambition and got the smiling duo together during the few minutes the TranzAlpine paused at Arthur’s Pass. Getting smiles for the camera was easy-as. Fittingly Ken and Charlie, valued employees in their respective organisations, present the idea face for New Zealand’s friendly tourism culture.
