A highlight of the Christchurch Tramway was recommending visitors take a short walk from the Victoria Square tram stop to Johnson’s quaint old grocery. With stock piled on shelves reaching the ceiling and displays making one believe it was Christmas everyday, it was a gem. The century-old grocery reopened after the September 2010 earthquake but was wrecked in February 2011. Grocer Colin Johnson was thought to be seriously injured when he stepped from the wreckage splattered with chutney.
I was delighted to see Colin Johnson had joined the pop-up container shopping mall close to Ballantynes.
He has remarkably stocked his container shop to look like the original. And he is run off his feet all day, every day. Stilton cheese and exciting products from many countries are selling like treats.
‘It’s a wonderful atmosphere here and just look at my outlook,’ he told me.
