We have been bombarded with earthquake books. Most are well-produced and graphically illustrate our seismic disaster. But depressing. In Paper Plus I found something more enlightening: . This is a magnificent impression of Christchurch as we will prefer to remember the city. Compiled by Denis Robinson, artists include Austen Deans, Nancy Tichborne, Sue Spigel and Don Mc Ara (from the Tramway Historical Society). Several paintings recall our Welcome Aboard attractions including the brilliant cover of Tramcar No. 11 in Cathedral Square and Punting on the half-title page. Our favourite locations are mostly represented. Even Johnson’s quaint old grocery is delightfully there and autumn in Hagley Park. The Heritage Trams pop up at regular intervals reflecting how much a part of the city they were (and will be again). At $49.99 (RRP) the book will undoubtedly be popular for gifts. Publisher is New Holland.
